202207. Fanny Fougerat Hors-Serie Type 73 (PC, 49.6%, 1973)

The cognac brand Fanny Fougerat is kind of a new kid on the block. She started distilling cognac under her own name only in 2013. The Fougerat family however is not new in the cognac world, already producing for the big houses for quite a while. The house is situated in the Borderies region and also owns Fins Bois vinyards. None in the Petite Champagne that I know of. This Type 73 is the first in a new series, the Hors-Serie, that will definitely appeal to the whisky-looking-for-affordable-malternatives types under us.

This Type 73 is quite high on alcohol, which is clear on its first nose. It is however open and fragrant with many breased fruits and vanille immediately apparent. Some dried apricots, plums and orange marmalade. Very fresh. Also some baking powder. In the mouth a first tanginess with a hint of sweetness then followed by a huge kick of alcohol combined with clear old cognac notes like coffee, leather, cinnamon and rancio. The alcohol level gives it a very good body which carries through. Even some smokiness, reminisent of a single malt. The fruityness keeps it very drinkable though.

This Type 73 is a very good start to, what we hope, a succesfull series of artisanal, cask strenght cognacs. Keep an eye on this cognac house in the near future!

Wow, that’s a very thorough introduction. Thanks EelcoA. One thing about these high ABV, pure, undiluted cognac is that you get to play “master blender”, and add as much or as little water as you want to mellow it out. I am planning to have a various abv strengths made into several 30ml mini bottles. In case you want to do the same…

For:
41.3% abv., add 6ml water
45% abv., add 3ml water
40.15% abv., add 7ml water

It seem like they’ve finally had the bottle cap seal figured out.

Pierre de Segonzac XO 40% abv.

This one looks like an exclusive U.S. release, in 2021, with only 420 bottles.

Hmmm, I wonder how much of it is from 1974.

Adding two more bottles to my Fanny Fougerat collection.

Cedre Blanc Extra Old 44% abv
Iris Poivre XO 40% abv

I am curious about that 1973 type, but the Petite Cigue, Laurier d'Apollon and Iris Poivré did not appeal to me. Cédre Blanc was nice, but still not my cup of tea.
Have you tasted any of them already?

Yes Ton, I agree. The Iris Poivre does taste relatively young. It’s floral and fresh. Their entry level XO. The 1973 is layered and complex. Dark fruit and Christmas cake. The abv is a little high. It was really good priced however, for something as old as from 1973.

I finished the 1973 and it's one of the best I've had so far.
